Via press release on December 20, 2023, the Commission celebrated the recent enactment of Act 34 (2023), which establishes a first-of-its-kind allotment of $7.5 million for the funding of indigent defense reform in Pennsylvania. The funding, for which the Interbranch Commission has advocated since its inception in 2005, takes a critical step toward ensuring equal access to our courts regardless of socioeconomic status. It paves the way for Pennsylvania to join nearly every other state in the nation in providing statewide and state-based funding for indigent defense services. To learn more about the funding established by Act 34 and the Commission’s long history of advocating for reform, please review our Criminal Justice Committee webpage.
