Commission Supports Legislation to Promote More Equitable Access to Jury Service

In March 2022, Commission staff submitted several letters to legislators in support of bills that would make jury service less onerous. On March 14, the Commission submitted to Pennsylvania House and Senate committee chairs its letter in support of legislation that would amend the Pennsylvania Juror Qualifications Statute to reduce the range of criminal offenses that currently disqualify former offenders from jury service for life. On March 15, the Commission submitted to legislators its letter in support of legislation that would increase the amount of juror compensation from $9 to $40 per day. Finally, on March 16, the Commission submitted its letter in support of legislation that would provide free parking to jurors for the duration of their duty. The Commission also suggested that the legislation be amended to include free public transportation.
